Testing For Mould In The Toronto-Ottawa-Montreal Corridor

Testing for mould is more than just a visual inspection of dark spots and fuzzy growths.  Mould spreads by way of spores which, combined with warm and/or humid conditions, spread rapidly in areas not immediately evident to the eye.  We offer instructions on taking mould samples.

If you want quick results, call us at 647-410-5025 and we’ll pick up the sample(s), return to to the lab, and can have it tested in as little as 1 hour.

We also offer automatic sampling service. A technicial will come to your site, conduct the sampling and return to the lab for testing (please call ahead to discuss additional costs, if any).

Not Sure Mould Is Gone? Get It Tested

Testing is most effective after removal and remediation. Once the mould is gone, make sure it’s gone for good.

Is Inhaling Mould Bad?

At best, mould can be an irritant. Hay-fever-like symptoms occur such as a runny nose, red eyes, sneezing and skin rash. However, it can be a severe problem for folks with allergies or asthma.

Mould has also been known to cause asthma attacks in people with pre-existing allergies. While research is ongoing, immediate mould removal is the only next step.

Getting Rid Of Mould

The most effective way to get rid of mould is to eliminate the growth conditions—water and moisture. This can be quite challenging, especially in the case of floods (where moisture permeates into every part of the building) or slow plumbing leaks when the invading species of mould remains unidentified until it’s too late.

Bleach and other household products often don’t work in addressing the spread of mould. Unless the growth conditions have been eliminated, it will return. If the mould problem is small (less than 10 sq/ft), you can often do it yourself.  However, significant mould problems will require a contractor.

6 Quick Tips
For Controlling Mould

Mould grows indoors and outdoors, and there is no real way to get rid of it entirely. However, since it thrives in the presence of moisture…

1

Eliminate moisture, eliminate mould. This is done by having proper ventilation of bathrooms, dryers and other appliances that generate moisture. Use de-humidifiers and air conditioners. Use exhaust fans when you’re cleaning, dishwashing and cooking.

2

If you have any water leaks in the building, taking care of those is the first step.

3

Cleaning and drying wet furniture or carpets immediately (or within 24 hours) vastly reduces the spread of mould.

4

With water and detergent, remove mould from hard surfaces and make sure it’s completely dry.

5

Try to limit or prevent condensation: insulate cold surfaces that have the potential for condensation such as windows, walls, piping etc.

6

Don’t put carpeting where there might be a moisture problem, such as next to the sink or close to drinking fountains.
