What Are Designated Substances?
Designated substances are unhealthy and dangerous chemical, metal and mineral compounds found in dwellings, commercial properties or other locations. Health and safety authorities have identified them as hazardous to living beings, and designated them for removal.
What Should I Do About Them?
Depending on your situation, there are a few options for action:
- Do nothing—in some cases, even though there may be one or more contaminants in a location, it’s best to leave the area undisturbed.
- Have the suspected area tested—use our sampling guide to help you collect and deliver your samples, or call us for automatic sampling and one of our technicians will come to take and deliver the samples to the lab.
- Contact an abatement consultant—if the contamination is significant and needs to be removed, we can help you find a suitable contractor.
Some of the Substances We Test
|Sample Transport Option||How it works|
|Automatic Sampling Service||Call us. A licensed technician will drive to your job site or building and collect the sample(s)*. The sample is then brought to the lab and the results are either emailed or FAXed to you as soon as the tests are done.
If it’s more convenient, we’ll call you with the results; either way, it’s a great time-saving measure.
*Additional cost for tech and sample pickup.
|Sample Pickup||This service is like automatic sampling service, except you take the sample yourself and we’ll pick it up. Perfect for asbestos abatement consultants writing DSS reports who aren’t in a position to deliver the samples themselves. Just give us a call.
The fee for pickup is only $60* within 30km of our locations in Toronto’s and Ottawa’s downtown cores.
*Reasonable additional cost for greater than 30km.
|Sample Drop-Off||We have several sample drop-off locations for safe, contact-free deposits. We’ll receive the sample(s) the next business day and begin work right away.|
|Mail or Courier||You can mail or courier your sample(s) too. Just make sure you seal them with a chain of custody form.|
|Rush (please call for arrangements)|

Victims of asbestos exposure often end up with lung cancer or other harmful lung problems. We donate a portion of our proceeds to Lung Cancer Canada for research towards finding a cure and to support educational programs on healthy breathing.
